Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, founded in 1748 as a place of safety, pilgrimage and penance. The interior is covered in painted 'visions' and The Santuario of Atotonilco church history as directed by its founder, Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro. It also played a role in the opening salvos of México's independence from Spain. Vendors sell crowns of thorns; the nuns sell simple fare from their small adjacent restaurant.
