January in San Miguel de Allende

Temperatures

Temperatures during January cause many who can, to head out to the warm beaches.  While blue skies prevail, the temperatures in this mile-high mountain town can be cold, except for the mid-day hours between noon and five.  High’s may reach sixty degrees-plus on a sunny day, but evening and early morning hours can be down into the forties.  People dress in layers, yet the Northern visitors, say, “What are you talking about – cold?  It’s not cold!”

What to Watch For

The town’s cultural-life presentations begin in full-force for this, the winter-tourism season.  Music, plays, lectures and art-openings are a constant.  Clear skies bring the Jardin back to life with people out visiting during sunny afternoons, as the days grow longer. Pass-times are pursued:  yoga, dance, drawing, acting, singing, Spanish classes and more are offered all over town.  The many NGO’s (not-for-profits) begin a season of creative and fun fund-raisers.  It’s easy to make connections and memories through the social and friendly atmosphere that prevails in the town this month.  Good time to go bird-watching with Audubon at Charco del Ingenio, or visit Cañada del Virgin Pyramid site.

Special Dates

See the local newspaper – ‘the Atencion’ for news of cultural events and classes, and the QUE PASA (bilingual) section for entertainment each week.  The Atención comes out weekly, on Friday afternoons and can be purchased on the town square from the Newspaper Man or at t he Biblioteca, its publisher.
