December in San Miguel de Allende

Temperatures

Temperatures dip into the low 30’s and 40’s after dark (sunset near 5:30 p.m.). Fireplaces and heaters keep homes, hotels and restaurants cozy.  People dress in layers - warm socks, sweaters, scarves - but daytime temperatures can rise into the comfortable high 60’s to low 70’s with generally sunny skies.

What to Watch For:  Día de Guadalupe

December in San Miguel is a magical season of song, lanterns, candlelight and entertainment. Experience the Day of Guadalupe, Mexico’s ‘sacred Mother’ with serenading Mariachis and altars dedicated to Guadalupe.

What to Watch For:  Posadas

Join a traditional Posada - a nighttime re-enactment of Joseph and Mary looking for shelter, with parades of children and their proud parents singing together, ending each night of nine nights in a cascade of piñatas, fruit and candy. Poinsettia trees tower in gardens and the Christmas Ornament Market near the San Juan market offers something for everyone.   Classical music, public caroling, plays and art openings are presented.

Special Dates:

December 12 - Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico’s Patroness.
December 16 – 24 – Posadas nightly.  Public routes are announced in the local English language newspaper, the Atencion.
December 31 – New Year’s Eve is celebrated in the Jardin, with a dance band, hand-held giant sparklers, families and friends celebrating and a good fireworks display overhead.
