March in San Miguel de Allende

Temperatures

Temperatures in March are in the mid-80’s with no-coat evenings.  It’s unusual to see rain in March, so expect glorious blue skies and pretty sunsets (as seen from the hillsides and rooftops).  While the ‘dry-season’ spreads across the countryside, in-town gardens and country haciendas remain green and blooming.  The Jacarandas begin to bloom covering San Miguel hillsides in a lavender canopy.

What to Watch For:  Cultural Events, Sports

Lectures at the Biblioteca, the house and garden tour, Pro-Musica cultural music series continues, art shows abound, Angela Peralta Theater presents flamenco and various local music groups, The Players Worship presents a play.  Audubon bird walks are scheduled at the Botanical Gardens and lake; the hot air balloons in the mornings are regular sights.  Excellent mornings for tennis, golf, and horseback excursions, and historical walks with Pro-Niños.

Special Dates:

March 17th – Arrival of del Señor de la Columna – The image of Our Lord of the Column (for Easter Ceremonies) is carried through the night from the Sanctuary of Atoltonilco to the church of San Juan de Dios in San Miguel.  Thousands of pilgrims who make the over-night journey are greeted at dawn in the entrance of town by fireworks and bells tolling citywide.

March 20th – Dia de San Jose – Celebrated at the Oratorio church and Plaza Civic with fireworks and dances.

March 21st – Desfile de Primavera (The Parade of Springtime) – Marks the beginning of the spring season and the Aztec new year, young school children parade as flowers and animals, proud parents accompany them.

March 22nd – Viernes de Dolores – An ancient Spanish tradition still observed in San Miguel as part of the Easter Pageantries, known as “Sorrowful Friday” which honors Our Lady of Sorrows as public fountains and homes are proudly and lavishly decorated with symbols of Mary’s coming sorrows at Easter.  Takes place at dusk and into the evening hours.  Popsicles are given to children, local homes are opened.
